Separation of Church & State
From Bud Carter
The so called separation of
church and state has always been aconfusing issue with me, so I did a little
studying and have found thefollowing. I am not saying that there is not more,
just that so far this is what Ifound. In 1801 a group of Baptists in Connecticut
were alarmed over a rumorthat was spreading throughout the Northwest that the
CongregationalDenomination
was about to be Established as the National Denominatiom of The
United States. In other words the Baptists, Presbyterians, Methodists, and
any other denominations would be deemed inferior or would be outlawed
altogether. They had heard horror stories from their parents and grandparents
about state established religion in England. Those who refused to follow the
dictates of the Church of England were subjected to imprisonment and torture. So
they fled England not to be Free From Religion, but to have
Freedom of Religous Expression. Naturally, when this first
generation of Americans heard that quite possibly there was about
to be a Church of the United States, they were understandably
alarmed. As a result they contacted then-President Thomas Jefferson about the
rumor. Jefferson allayed their fears in a letter addressed to the Danbury
Baptist on January 1,1802 : I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of
the whole American people which declared that their legislature should Make
no Law respecting an establishment of Religion, or prohibiting the
free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of
Separation Between Church and State. This can be found in, Thomas Jefferson,
quoted in Merril D. Peterson, ed,JEFFERSON WRITINGS,

Also out of the 56 men who attended the Constitutional Convention and formulated our nation's guiding document , 53 were of The Christian Faith. George Washington wrote this; "Let my heart, gracious God, be so affected with Your glory and majesty that I may...Discharge those weighty duties which Thou requires of me...I have called on Thee for pardon and foregiveness of sins...For the sacrifice of Jesus Christ offered upon the cross for me...Thou gav’st Thy Son todie for me; and hast given me assurance of salvation"

Prayers{1907}; William J JOHNSON George Washington the CHRISTIAN,
There is a lot more, but this shall do for a start.
